LAKU is a San Francisco-based architecture + design studio led by California registered architect Cecilia Marie Brock.

Cecilia has over sixteen years of experience designing and leading diverse project types at a wide range of scales. These past projects include creative offices, adaptive reuse projects, exhibition + installation designs, education + campus buildings, public spaces, furniture and custom residential projects with award-winning architecture studios AHA (Atelier Hitoshi Abe), ShubinDonaldson, 1100: Architect, and RIOS.

Outside of the office, she enjoys exploring nooks and crannies of San Fran with her family, workshopping new ideas in the kitchen, and volunteering at local conservation projects and beach clean-ups.

Cecilia is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the Urban Land Institute (ULI) San Francisco chapter, and the International Living Futures Institute (ILFI).

Approach

The following design approaches are integrated into each project:

  • Holistic designs. We value the connection between our interior and exterior spaces, always looking for ways to connect to our environment. We value tactile, detailed interiors as much as the building’s form within its context.

  • Place-based work. Imbuing originality and meaning to each project through its social, ecological, and historical contexts. We believe that place-based work should also be inherently sustainable.

  • Incorporating craft + art. We believe that beauty and delight are essential to every space, so we look for ways to imbue these concepts into our work at both the macro and micro scales.

About the name

“Laku noc” is what my mom always says at bedtime - it roughly means sleep easily. Her family immigrated from Croatia (Istria specifically) after WWII and a lot of their customs came with them. But as it happens, memories fade and we lose habits and languages. Through her now rough translation skills and my (probably inaccurate) google searching, we decided that LAKU means easily or lightly. And I found that a fitting name for the studio and hope for a new future. This pic is from my summer 2023 sabbatical and visit to Grandma’s hometown of Pican, Croatia.
